Texas Tree Cemetery

The Texas Tree Cemetery is where trees may be memorialized when they die.  I am convinced, through countless interactions, that many people have a favorite tree. For example, a favorite tree could be as simple as the big one that grew over your back deck. Perhaps your favorite tree was planted to mark an important event in the lives of your family. Some trees stand as inspirational sentinels or witnesses to an event that brings meaning to people’s sense of history. When these trees become diseased, or eventually die, they leave an emotional void with no simple way to express what the tree meant to you or to your community.  Trees do not have to be widely recognized as famous by many people, but rather may have played a role in the lives of one family or even an individual that lived with the tree(s).

The Process

A submission to the Texas Tree Cemetery will not only give you a place to memorialize a special tree, but will be a graveyard for interested visitors to recognize the important roles the deceased trees have played in the lives of others. Once a tree is buried in the cemetery, visitors will be able to access the graveyard and share in the respect and loss of the interred trees by reading obituaries and viewing images.  To submit a tree to the Texas Tree Cemetery, you will need to complete the form below.  Most of the information will be a description of the tree, why you think it died (it is ok if you don’t know), its location (limited to a city/town or county), and other relevant demographic data. Also, there will be space on the form to describe why the tree was special to you.  This will comprise the basis for the Obituary.  Images of the tree are highly encouraged and can be uploaded with the form.  My role, as the coroner, will be to provide a brief note on the species of the tree and types of problems that species has – its diseases, pests, and environmental disorders. This report will be added to the obituary so that others may learn about the common causes of tree mortality in Texas.
