Digital Diagnostics
I have successfully diagnosed countless tree problems by analyzing images of signs and symptoms during my career as a tree pathologist. This form of digital diagnostics is an excellent way to aid in deciding whether a tree has one of the many diseases or pests that commonly plague them. Treatments can be prescribed when warranted. Digital diagnosis can save trees as well as the resources spent on recommendations needed to treat them, while avoiding unnecessary treatments.
A digital diagnostic session involves you to fill out and submit the form below along with uploading a maximum of 12 images of your diseased tree. Payment is required ($35.00) for processing the submission.
Everything You Need to Know.
There are many advantages to obtaining a preliminary diagnosis of a tree problem using virtual, or digital diagnostics. The cost is low, and I will be able to determine if treatments are warranted. My analysis will go beyond a diagnosis to provide a prognosis. In some cases, the prognosis may indicate further treatment of the tree would be futile, in which removal is recommended. Removals may also be recommended if the tree is deemed to be dangerous. Therefore, a diagnostic report based on the submission of images may not only lead to a treatment for a problem, but may also save you money and even remove a potential hazard on your property.
By submitting images of your tree to this site, I will examine the signs and symptoms of the problem and return a report containing my opinion as to the cause of the problem. The diagnosis will include an explanation for the symptom, the reasons those types of symptoms occur on trees, the potential cause(s) of the symptoms, and solutions for mitigating the problem or controlling the pathogens involved. I will also include a level of confidence for the diagnosis so that you can make an informed decision on how to proceed with treatments. This information will aid in your decision whether to hire a certified arborist.

The quality of a digital diagnosis depends on the quality of the images you submit. Images taken with smartphones are sufficient, but sometimes the resolution varies among different smartphones. A higher resolution allows me to increase the magnification of your image so that I can see details of the signs and symptoms.
JPEGs are the recommended format for submitting your digital images. If the image quality is poor I may request new pictures.
Another important consideration is the subject of your photographs. Therefore, please take pictures of the following views of the tree:
- The entire tree from two different aspects.
- The landscape in which the tree is growing.
- Different images of the trunk of the tree from two different angles, including the base up to the first lateral branch or about 8- 10 ft. up the trunk.
- The lower trunk and what the soil conditions look like where the tree is growing in the ground.
- Images of symptomatic leaves, branches, or twigs.
- The number of images depends on you. They should contain any patterns of discoloration on leaves or other parts that lead you to believe the tree is diseased.
- Close ups of any abnormal appearances on the tree that you believe may help me with the diagnosis.
Finally, always look at your images before you send them. Make certain they are in focus!
